after 40 years these 3 things have changed

I’ve noticed since I turned 40 that people are asking me my opinion on design for cabinetry as it goes with counters, appliances, flooring, backsplash, lighting, and the list goes on.  This is really the fun part of my job and something I really enjoy.  I love gaining knowledge on remodeling and building cabinets and I try to learn something new every day.  I am hopeful that I can be helpful to those of you who need new cabinets or ways to update your cabinets.

1- I learned to draft cabinets via various software cabinet programs.

This is something I NEVER EVER thought I would be able to do.  I don’t know about you but if you have ever looked at a project and thought that there was no way in H-E-double hockey sticks you would ever be able to do it, then you know what I am talking about.  While I sit and layout a kitchen and go over measurements its still unimaginable to me that I was able to learn this, and I LOVE IT!  Its so exciting to figure out what I can do with a space and how I can make it functional and beautiful for someone to enjoy.

2- Becoming a finisher and being asked questions about the process.

Ever since my dad and I took over all the work ourselves one of my main jobs was working in the finish shop.  I started over 10 years ago and I literally learned by dad and by fire.  I found out that one stain color does not look the same on different woods.  I learned if you spray your lacquer in the heat it will dry before it hits the wood and creates bubbles.  I will never forget the time I was wearing gloves and everything felt smooth and dad said. “April you can’t check if the finish is smooth with gloves on, everything is smooth with gloves on.” Oops.  I remember that being one of the first days in the finish shop, at least it wasn’t last week.

3- People asking me if I can offer design and functionality for their kitchen remodel.

This is a good one and makes me feel like I’m grown up.  Yes, I can help with your kitchen design and remodel.  This is my most favorite.

So if you’re thinking of remodeling your kitchen, or you are needing help, even a question about cabinets answered I am really happy to help.  This is really fun for me!
